This may seem like stupid question, but I am new to motorcycle riding. When I pass another motorcycle, they almost always wave at me. I wave back, but is there any special signal? Sometimes they wave below the handlebars, sometimes above. I want to be polite to my fellow riders, so any information would be helpful. Thanks!
Under no circumstances should you fail to wave back. The correct response to the down low wave is a combination of a thumbs down followed immediately by middle finger. Anything else will just **** people off.

Down here in Florida it's a little different.
After someone gives you a downlow wave you should immediately give a downlow peace sign, and then curl your index finger up.
If someone does a normal wave, you should clench your fist in front of your stomach and move it up and down rapidly six times.
Seriously, it may be polite to wave, but only if it's safe to do so. In other words if you're cornering, going fast, or on a bumpy road, it may be best to keep your hands on your bars.
Also, never wave at sport bikes. It just encourages them to pass you at 110 mph and scare the crap out of you.
Over in the UK the new fashion is the group of gestures below. I think they have already arrived on the east coast state side so get practicing and be ahead of the other guys. I particularly like the Dandahasta indicating the devotee should seek refuge under his lifted foot, be warned this one is for Goldwing riders only....
