I don't even think about things like that when I'm ridin. If you always worry about bad stuff happening, why ride at all? It is unfortunate when it does happen, and it does. But why waste an enjoyable thing worrying? Just stay alert and enjoy the ride.
I'm not fatalistic. I won't go down unless something *causes* me to. 'Beer' (being drunk) is a 'cause' and I went down (luckily I was stopped and in gravel). I don't believe one 'will go down eventually' because it's just as easy to say 'one will never go down'. It's cause that does it, plain and simple...IMO.
I'm 68 and have been riding since I was 14. Have never went down. I have had over 30 bikes from a Rune to Whizzer motor bike. Just returned from a 14 day 8,300 mile ride up the Alaskan highway. That is about 600 miles per day average .
I am an extreme defensive driver. I ride/drive as if everyone is out to get me. I scan way ahead down the road. I do not listen to radio's, drink or do anything that is a distraction to the focus on riding/driving any of my vehicles.
I have logged over 1.7 million miles in my lifetime without an accident.
I do not believe that it is inevitable that I will fall down. One ride this week, I had two people turn left in front of me. I was watching and slowed and was ready as I felt that they would turn. On was a teen age girl in a hurry and one was a guy in a SUV that pulled out from a stop sign on an intersection as he was looking at me.
My only concern is will I give up the bike/car when I get older and shouldn't ride/drive anymore.
