+1 on the infrared, but... Who on here really believes the cops will bust their azz to find out who it is? Well, I don't. So, you'll have a nice video of a guy going through your stuff, and that's about it.
+1 on practice makes perfect. BUT... No practice in the world can prepare you for this kind of stress situation.
I, for myself, don't own any handguns (not allowed to foreigners in MA, even if legal permanent resident), but my wife is well armed... I, for myself, rely on the good ol Kukhri. The other guy better have a gun.
If you can produce good clear photos the police may not have to look to hard to find the burglar. Many burglars are repeat offenders that have extensive rap sheets. Some of them will continue to burgle even when on parole or work release. It might be as simple as calling his parole officer and getting his address. Your previous posts in the gun forum indicate that you do have rifles. Perhaps a short-barreled carbine chambered in a pistol caliber would be better than a Kukhri.
Like a few other diligent people on here. I lock my garage and I lock my bike. I live in Texas and yes you can shoot thieves but it will still cost you. There could be a Grand jury investigation and you are still subject to civil law. With that said if I catch someone trying to steal from me they will go to jail at least and they could be shot first. If I have to shoot someone I doubt they will survive. Their survival would be an accident and not due to any planning on my part once the shooting starts.
Personally I would get yourself one of these. He hears everything and will protect you and your bike. Once people know you have him they stay away. Best security system money can buy I leave the bikes in the yard unlocked and have never had an incident.

Yep, some will say "double tap", I say empty it.

A bear trap would snap the bone. No worries about manslaughter, and the perp will be caught!
Hurt so darn bad he'll wish you had shot him. And if it is a neightbor's kid, he'll learn a lifetime lesson!

Great idea, except booby traps in ones home are illegal. You'll wind up in jail and the sucker with the broken leg will likely wind up owning your house and everything else.
From: Illinois - Our governor MAKES our license plates!
Years ago, punks broke into my garage and helped themselves to quite a few things. Cops came over and made a report.
A few days later, punks were caught breaking into a garage just down the block. I called the police department. They said it was probably the same punks, lived with their parents. I asked if they were going to search the house for my stuff and cops said no, it would be too much trouble to get a search warrant. Just file with insurance. Real good policing policy, huh?

Or you might recognize the burglar on video is the teenage thug that lives down the street, your daughters ex boyfriend, ...............
I feel better now. I knew something had to be missing from my garage and I finally found out what it was. The high dollar skateboard I bought my daughter five years ago. She road it like three times, fell of it and hurt herself, and never road it again. She had recently cleaned her room and put the skateboard in the garage. So it was obviously some punk kids. I knew it had to be someone real stupid not to take the 12 pack of Dos XX's that was in the fridge
I feel better now. I just wish the wife would have let me sell that skateboard on ebay when I wanted to.
