You may have scared them off before they had time to take anything. Could have been any noise from inside the house.
As far as shooting them. I would have no problem if my famliy or my life was at stake. But for tools or anything in my garage... I would have a hard time living with killing someone over that. Maybe not.. Hope I never find out.
As a former LEO I am glad I never had to shoot anyone. Came close once but never did.
I never leave my garage doors open. I don't want curious onlookers to see whats inside! I have a few classic Corvettes , a hot rod , my Roadking and all the tools necessary to maintain my bike and cars. Whenever anyone comes to my home to do repairs or even the gardeners, the doors stay down and locked. As far as shooting trespassers here In NY they better be about to inflict dealdly physical force upon your person or your going to the graybar hotel. Had a friend Kill an armed robber in his Jewelry Store a few years back. It was ruled justifiable by the DA but his family sued my friend for wrongful death. It cost my friend $10k in legal fees before the dead mans family went away empty handed. I'm just saying...
We don't even have to drag them in the house after we shoot them anymore in Oklahoma. "Make My Day Law" was recently changed to include outside property as well!!! As far as the burgular sueing for negligence, don't give them the chance
If they didn't take anything out of your garage, you should think about the quality of your tools. All kidding aside, better locks wont help. Burglars open almost any lock in seconds. A cam? Well, I don't really think they come during the day, all you would see is a dark screen with a moving shadow on it. To shoot them is a good idea, but you could hit your bike with a ricochet. And as they already noticed that there is nothing worth taking for them makes your garage a little safer. Not much you can do, IMO, exept move.

That's what Infrared cams are for, $100.00.
If you hit the target (suspect) with a wad cutter, you don't have to worry much about ricochets. Practice makes prefect.
I love living in a "Stand Your Ground" rights state, and feel sorry for those who are denied the right to protect themselves and their family, even on their own property.
It could be the would-be thief was looking for a handgun to steal. I see on other forum threads that a common storage place for a handgun is in a saddlebag.
Just thinking out loud. Glad to see you're not missing anything and no-one got hurt.

+1 on the infrared, but... Who on here really believes the cops will bust their azz to find out who it is? Well, I don't. So, you'll have a nice video of a guy going through your stuff, and that's about it.
+1 on practice makes perfect. BUT... No practice in the world can prepare you for this kind of stress situation.
I, for myself, don't own any handguns (not allowed to foreigners in MA, even if legal permanent resident), but my wife is well armed... I, for myself, rely on the good ol Kukhri. The other guy better have a gun.
When my boys come home late after I've hit the rack, they use the keypad on the garage door to get in the house. One night they forgot to put the door down. The scooter was untouched but the next morning I discovered all the beer in my garage fridge was gone. They left me my wife's wine coolers, proof that thieves are without a conscience.
NAH, JUST PROVES THEY LIKE BEER....
it does sound like kids, but i would lock'er up from now on.
