Default Why do Harleys sound so good?

We all love sound, goes without saying, but the metrics have copied everything else and I often wondered why they just can't get the exhaust note right!! Maybe shovelhead bob could shed some light? I understand knife and fork conrods, ignition timing and all that, but is it just this combo or is there something magical? Some metrics are so similar in design / layout but they just can't do it ...( and I for one am glad about that ), but WHY?

The difference in the Harley engine is the crankshaft only has only 1 pin and both piston rods connect to it.This coupled with the "V" arrangement of the cylinders means the pistons cannot fire at even intervals.

I've heard the other metric companies say they use a 1 pin design, what keeps them from getting the exact same sound?

I've heard that MoCo has a patent on the sound of their big twins.

Don't know if it's true or not.

I believe the metrics have one piston firing on one revolution of the crankshaft and the other on the next where a Harley would be piston fires, next piston fires at 315 degrees,405 degree gap, piston fires, next piston fires at 315,405 degree gap

Im sure Shovelhead Bob will be along to give a better explanation.

It aint got nothing to do with mechanical design. That sound came straight from God. Do you think the big man would be riding around on some little coffee grinder sounding piece of junk. Nope, that is why it sounds like thunder, to just give the inner feeling of power and awe.
