Default need to buy a helmet, opinions?

For those of you who do wear helmets, I am looking to buy a new one. I had a HJC half shell, but didn't really like it because of how the wind would grab it at highway speeds. I am looking more into full face/ 3/4 helmets. Which of the two do you guys prefer? Full face can be nice in cooler/cold weather, but can be hot in the summer time. At the local dealer they have two I like a 3/4 with face shield and a full face where the whole front end lifts up (both made by HJC) Any opinions welcome.

I personally prefer my small Old School lid from "Zox". It is DOT approved and about as small and comfortable as I could find. Doesn't catch the wind either. I did just order a HJC Modular that I plan to use for the colder months.

I also have a Bell Drifter that catches the air real bad and will actually choke you going down the road. It's a shame cause it has other features I really like. I also have a Bell 3/4 I tried for cold weather, but I didn't really like it.

If you really want to invest in a helmet that you will enjoy for years to come, look into a Shoei Multitech modular. Extremely comfortable and solid. The HJC 3/4 Carbon Fiber is also excellent, and its the same one Harley sells for about 300 bucks. Got mine on ebay for about $180. With helmets-and I've had quite a few-you definitely get what you pay for. Don't scrimp on this purchase!

I have a Nolan Modular helmet (front lifts up) and love it. Installed the J & M headset (so much better than the Harley headset), and I use it year round here in South Georgia.

HJC's don't fit me, neither do KBC (the other brand the MoCo rebrands). If you're going to buy a FF, do it on a day you can spend an hour wandering around the dealer. Pressure points usually hit me after 30 minutes. The MoCo rebrands also seem to be the lower end helmets, the one I rode with had crap for padding and was noisier than going without.

I now wear an Arai Vector year round, it's the most comfortable helmet I've tried and it vents well enough to wear in the summer. Most importantly it's the one that fits my melon. I'd say skip the HD dealer and find someone who carries a full line. Spend some time trying on Shoei, Arai, Nolan, and Scorpian.

thanks for the replies. When I refered to local dealer, I was actually talking about a honda powersports dealer that carries a full line of various brands of helmets. I know the MoCo has some helmets, but I wouldn't buy one there.

FF helmets are nice w/o a windshield. I have a Shoei FF and it's got venting in it that you can open when it is hot and close off when it's cold. For a half I couldn't find a better one that fit me than the vega. It sits lower on your head than a lot of the other halfs. I can wear it all day. I spent 14hours in it recently. It doesn't buffet nearly as much as the carbon fiber composites.

What ever you do don't scrimp on price and do as other said spend a great deal of time trying different ones. I have had some in the past that get those pressure points that will make them unbearable to wear very long.

I also use a Shoei FF, and it is a really nice helmet. Highly recommended.

Mine was around $400, and you do get what you pay for with helmets...

Technically, the DOT doesn't "approve" helmets. There are a set of standards set forth by the US Department of Transportation, to which the manufacturers will indicate their compliance through their own internal testing and subsequently put the DOT label on them.

Snell does have an approval process, although Snell does not approve modular helmets (at least not the last time I checked). Modulars provide about the same level of protection of a 3/4, but add the comfort of a full face. They are also good for protection from rocks, bugs, sand and other similar projectiles.
