Default I'm Gonna Stick It Out There From Now On

Ever ride with (or maybe you are) somebody who sticks out a foot to let riders behind them know if there's something on the road --- dead animal carcus, piece of wood, whatever? I never have said anything, but thought, "Thanks I guess, but I can see it. I'll go around it" ----- until the other day, that is. If you're like me, listen to this.

A buddy of mine was in front of me on Saturday afternoon, and we were behind a couple of cars in the passing lane, passing a couple of other slower ones. This car swerves around some gator pieces in the passing lane, my buddy starts swerving, and I never saw the gators until it was almost too late. Swerved between the first 2, but almost hit the last & largest gator. Never saw it, and my buddy didn't stick his foot out. (Maybe he didn't have time to react, but he doesn't do it anyway.) I decided right then & there that (if there's time) it's a pretty good idea to stick out a foot to let the riders behind you know that there's something on the road.

To you guys who already do this ---- I get it now. Thank you. All you lead riders should do the same thing. I know I will, from now on. I thought I could see the road from behind another bike, but it's not always the case.

It's a way of life here in NW Louisiana. Lots of road gators, real gators, Dillo,s, coons, snakes, possum, fox, deer, you name it we have it. We count on the riders ahead to forewarn us in the back.

If I got time, I'll stick mine out. If the rider behind me doesnt care for that, he can just close his eyes I guess!

You, and only YOU are responsible for your actions, that includes riding safely, you saw the car AND your buddy swerve, but almost didn't see the obstruction?
As soon as somebody(car, truck, bike) in front of me swerves, taps the brake, etc, I prepare to take evasive action.

If your buddy pointed out the obstruction you would have had to have been watching him, not the road, and it would have taken as long or longer to see the hazard.

When I ride I don't expect the rider in front of me to ride for me.

That being said, if there is a pothole , oil or sand, I'll point it out so the other riders can change there line, if its a log, retread or alligator, I expect them to see it them self.

Here in the country it is a way of life..We that ride around here lift our leg while riding more than a Hound Dog with a full bladder.lots of road kill every day,not to mention the live stuff .Seriously came around a corner Saturday morning and there must have been 15 Goats in the middle of the road, posted speed limit was 55.Later that day running along a hard blacktop road and there was a full grown cow just standing (eating) on the shoulder of the road.

Oh brother !!!!! Thanks alot (not) for the sermon. Just thought I was tryin' to help. I'll bet all the leg-sticker-outers know what I mean. Nobody rides my bike for me! If I wanted that, I'd be the passenger!

Neither do I, but a heads up about something coming at me that I may not yet be able to see, never hurts. Besides, if I'm riding behind someone, I'm scanning over what they're doing in addition to watching the road, what may be approaching from the sides and keeping a weather eye on my mirrors. Just like cars ahead of me, a rider in front of me may do something that I need to be mindful of.
