The bell has protected you and your bike and now it is time to retire it. Since it has protected you, you will need to give it a peaceful resting place away from taunting gremlins.

First, get a mason jar with a lid and a quart of motorcycle oil. Take the bell and put it in the jar and cover it with oil. Close it up and put it on the shelf. You can have a ceremony with robes and candles, however a toast with beers works better. The oil keeps the gremlins away and allows the bell to have a peaceful rest.

What brand and weight of oil and which hole?

Well no wonder! The reason you had problems is because traditionally (riding 44 years, so this goes back a ways) the person who gave you the bell is supposed to put it on the bike for you! Never buy a bell for yourself, or put it on the bike yourself! It doesn't work the same way. In some cases, it can even cause problems!

I quit changing my oils and making adjustments to my bike after installing a bell, it'll protect me right.

All of the answers to bell questions are found in the official harley davidson manual titled "for whom the bell tolls".

Have to agree ... the bell was given to you to protect you from the gremlins.
