I've had apes on every bike I've owned since the 80's. For me they are very comfortable and I've "never" had control issues. I did the MSF experienced riders course with my Heritage that had 16 inch apes and passed. Guess I fooled them! Yes, they aren't for everyone.
If someone is a crappy rider with stock bars, they will be a crappy rider with apes. I ride every day and practice a lot, no issues with slow speed maneuvers here.
I am also I MSF Rider Coach and often use my bike for demos in the BRC/ERC.
Again, no issues here.
Sunday i rode in our annual toy run. weather was awesome in the mid 70s. roughly 200 bikes. It was particularly interesting to watch the 3 or 4 riders with apes wallowing around nearly falling down making low speed manuevers in the parking lot. then you get to watch them shaking the feeling back into their hands at stop lights.
To me I love apes, the look, the feel and all that goes with apes.
I had em on everything I've owned so far. My EGS has 12" bagger apes but they'll be changed out over the winter to 15"monkey bars. I've never wallowed at slow speed no idea what you are talking about.
