Sunday i rode in our annual toy run. weather was awesome in the mid 70s. roughly 200 bikes. It was particularly interesting to watch the 3 or 4 riders with apes wallowing around nearly falling down making low speed manuevers in the parking lot. then you get to watch them shaking the feeling back into their hands at stop lights.
To each their own. I tend to agree, I never understood the allure of ape hanger style handlebars. They look way to clumsy and awkward to me, not to mention downright uncomfortable, but they've been around for a LONG time and I doubt they'll go away any time soon. While I'd never put them on my bike, I have no problems with anyone who wants to put them on theirs!
I have mini apes on my bike and I absolutely love them. My hands ae well below my shoulder level, my wrist angle is perfect and I no longer get numb fingers. I would have to agree that it appears to me that bars that put your hands up above shoulder level might be awkward but not having ever riden with a set it's merely my opinion.
I rode a buddies Sporty with them...just over the shoulder, wansn't too bad for the little ride I did. I can see why they are illegal here though. Was very difficult to slow speed maneuver with them.
One of my tech's has 16" one's on his Road King.....looks cool but he uses the throttle lock a lot.
Comfort is questionable....people think sportbikes are uncomfortable having never ridden one.
