Default Getting home with a broken throttle cable.

While working down In Miss. A few years back I broke a throttle cable 30 miles out of town. So I call one of my employees that was down there with me and ask him to get my tool trailer and come and get me and the bike.

He was sorta pissed as he had friends from up north visiting and they were just walking out the door to head to Bourbon street. (cant blame him) So they come and get me and everything worked out. He's a young guy, rides a Honda 950 and into that trick riding stuff does the fronties rides down the highway on the rear wheel for miles, you get the picture. Honda rider but still a righteous MO FO.

So the next day I'm talking to a bro up north and he says you could have used your boot laces to get home. And I do wear Red Wing laced logger boots to ride. Could have tied a lace to the carb throttle and went. Yeah, it would have been a drag but I would have made it home.

These guys were on limited visiting time so if I had to do it over I would have at least attempted it.

Any of you guys ever done this ? Remember I was in a different state with not many people to call.

It would be rough removing the AC without tool. If you had the tools it will work.

For what it's worth I'm running a Mikuni 42. Probably could have happened.

Years ago, the throttle cable broke when I was ~ 20 miles from home on my Bonneville. Pulled the sheath off of it, looped it over the bars, and pulled it w/ my hand for the ride home. Made using the front brake a bit dicey, but I took it easy, and got home w/o any kind of incident. Put a new one on the next day, and threw a spare in the tool bag.

Or the return cable can be used for the throttle if you have the tools to switch them.

on my first non harley bike I had the throtle and clutch cable brake all the time,, they made there own with silver and there were brittle and broke easy....
I used to turn the idle screw in and ride it home that way if it was the throttle.
If the clutch cable broke I learn how to shift without it...

I've used the Shoe lace thing years ago, was traveling Cross Country and cable snapped in East Texas heading west, not that much fun. but got me 30 or so miles down the road to a small Independant who had a cable They also feed me and offered a bed for the night.

i've not used shoe laces, but have turned up the idle screw and slipped the clutch enuf to get home. Kinda hairy at the stop signs, sort of just coasted thru.

I had it happen way back in the ol school days. Get a piece of string, tie it to the carb and put the other end in your teeth and ride. Little jerky, but I got home. ride on. cole
