Buddy of mine tore his 2010 SG down to replace with forged SE crank and it's stamped made in USA. BTW, we checked to see how true it is and it was perfect. Very nice cast crank. Good job Harley!
Very amusing thread. First, this guy has no clue. Can he give any details? No. I can. I have VERY recently visited several of the Chinese crank manufacturers. They range from garage operations that are junk all the way to Mexin in Chongqing that manufactures forged and ductile Iron cranks for Many manufacturers from Chinese ones like Jen Dong and Fongshen to Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, etc. These guys are ISO 9001 and TS16949 certified. They make top of the line stuff on state of the art equipment. Although a few of them will show a Harley logo in their presentation, they all admit that Harley cranks are made in the US, although Harley has talked to a few of them. The Chinese have a tendency to exagerate about who they sell to.
Now, cylinder sleeves are a different story. The sleeves are all made in China or India. They are very high quality. Almost impossible to get sleeves in the states anymore - that has all gone overseas.
My guess is the piston rings are Chinese too. Most are. Not sure about the piston itself.. could be US produced, but chances are Federal Mogul out of China.
Con rods could be Chinese too.
Valves are probably US, probably made by Eaton. However, there is an excellent Chinese valve manufacturer- Haling near Chongqing also that MIGHT be supplying them.
Other than that, I am certain that the rest of the engine is US cast, machined, and Assembled, along with the frame, most of the other working parts and most of the plastic parts also. I know this because I have been to most of the same suppliers and SEEN THEM BEING PRODUCED.
I wish people like that moron who started this would only speak when they had actual facts.
By the way, if Harley pays more than $100 for that Crank complete, I would be shocked. Pretty good profit margin if they are charging $1100.... gotta love service part markups.
What do Kawasaki riders, Honda riders, Yamaha riders, Suzuki riders, BMW riders, and the rest of the whole freakin' world for that matter have in common? Jealousy that what!!!
You do know they'll sell a Harley to anyone, right?
I own a 2002 Deuce and a Yamaha FZX700s and a Honda CB-1. I assure you the rice will beat the HD. BTW neither of my metrics are crotch rockets. Now a VROD, I can't beat, but then that bike actually uses some modern technology and design (thanks, Porsche) I'll bet you haven't ridden a sportbike (people don't call them "crotch rockets anymore.) My Deuce would probably beat a Shadow 750, but you miss the point entirely. The thread, if you want to call it that, isn't about my metric, or my Deuce.
