Holy $hit, a Harley that leaks oil?? What is the world coming too? Sorry, thats some old $hit. But I must say, mine doesnt leak at all and yes its full to the lines, something that I thought I would never say or see.
Harley has been working to resolve this problem for over a century now. I heard from a factory rep that it should be fixed beginning with 2011 models.
Funny. I read a book about the history of HD, and oil leaks came up on all models up to the Evo. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard. All other engine manufacturers got this down pretty well.
When I got my '99 RK it was ten years old and didn't leak a single drop til I worked on it. Guess I had to turn it into a REAL Harley! Nah, I swapped out the gear set and nicked the main seal. It only seaps a very tiny bit. Would have to sit and watch it for three maybe four days to see it actually drip...
OOPS! Once I submitted this response, I noticed in my sig pic there's an oil spot right under where I'm talkin about! HEH!, but that was before I did the swap, and that spot is from my wife's mini van. GOTTA git some new sig pics!
Coming over from the metric world I have heard all the oil leak storys about HD'S .Like its not a Harley if it does not leak and all that kind of stuff, And I Really hope thats all Urban legend stuff, I have family members who own Victory Bikes and I have kept this Oil leak stuff to myself because they will let me have an ear full if they knew. When I told them of my Getting a Harley I was told it will be in the shop more than its on the road, So I really dont want the "I told you so" Speech. Also have a freind that rides a metric and went with me to pick up the Bike when I bought it and he made the observation that the service Dept. was the largest part of the building and make the remark they really need all that space for the multiple repairs needed for Harleys. So he doesnt need to know of the oil leaks either.

Tell yer friend all that space is for storing the pretty chrome parts which brought harley the RUB market. Just like fishing lures, they aint made for getting the fish's attention, they are made to get the buyer's attention!

I bought it new in 2008 and is still under factory warranty. The first leak was at the top of the cylinder head on the front cylinder, the second leak was at the bottom rear cylinder, both times new gaskets were installed.
One thing that can cause this is starting the bike, jumping and and taking off and riding fast and hard before the motor is up to temp. Luminum expands when heated, so basically when you are at operating temp, you should theoretically have your best seal. If the jugs are warped because of not waiting till it's warmed up, some have tried to hone them flat again with varied success. I always wait untill I can feel heat in the rear rocker box covers with my hand before I take off (usually not more than a couple minutes unless it's 20ş out)
