I own a 2008 Softail custom With A little over 5000 miles on it, I have had to have oil leaks fixed twice since I bought it. The leaks were in 2 different areas of the engine.
Is this just sloppy work from the factory or is this a design flaw?
Maybe, but more likely improperly installed seals, or similar issue. Where was it leaking from both times, and what was done to accomplish stopping the leak?
I bought it new in 2008 and is still under factory warranty. The first leak was at the top of the cylinder head on the front cylinder, the second leak was at the bottom rear cylinder, both times new gaskets were installed.

well then definatley keep them on this. Shouldn't be anything major. The stock gaskets are (or at least used to be) pretty crappy anyways.

Harley has been working to resolve this problem for over a century now. I heard from a factory rep that it should be fixed beginning with 2011 models.

Engraved Rebellion: Inside Bundnerbike's Glam Rock II
A 2005 Ultra Classic I used to ride had porosity in the engine cases. With only 3K miles, it leaked oil like a sieve. The motor had to be removed from the frame, split open and rebuilt with new cases engraved with the bike's VIN. A MoCo rep from Milwaukee visited the dealer to authorize the repair, which was performed under warranty.
