Thinking of going with a set of performance heads and cams for my TC88 and leaving it at 88". Probably use S&S stuff. Has anyone done just the heads and cams and not bumping up the cubic inches? If you did, how do you like it and is it worth the money??

Just lettin ya know, it is do-able. The previous owner had the cams installed so I can't give you a comparison other than saying I've read threads here, and articles elsewhere that it was a good alternative or pre-mod before getting into the cubes. S&S is good quality, and you'll pay for that as you most likely know.
Check out member "thedonthere" over in the dyna section. His fxdb 88" is putting out 92hp & 95tq. Andrews 37h cams and heads were done by Dewey along with a Rinehart 2-1 pipe.
check out the two Threads that post the DNYO sheets... One in the touring and another in the softail sections...
You will get a lot of ideas of what other have gotten by looking at those sheets....
I put S&S 510G cams in my 88" before I bored it to 95" and had head work done. The bike ran great with just the cam upgrade because here in California the bike came with EPA/CARB restricted cams. Now with the additional cubic inches and the heads breathing better, there is a big difference in performance.
I'd just do cams and pick a set that are good for doing headwork and a 95" later. Personally, I don't see tearing down the top end and not going to 95". By the time the heads are off, you are 75% of the way done.
Matter of fact, the above is just what I am doing. I have a set of low mile take off heads and a set of take off jugs waiting on the shelf till my bike needs a top end job. I plan on getting the machine work done and being able to do the swap in a day. The only trouble is I refuse to do it until my bike needs it. At 77k miles, she still doesn't smoke or use oil between changes. Who knows if and when it will ever need a top end job...
