i ride in the cold a lot out of necessity, we only have one car now (i just sold my honda commuter to pay a water bill, $900 water bill apparently the town of goshen only bills you once a year and gives you three weeks to pay... and a ridiculously high electric bill as well as some other bills) so if my wife needs the car we have left i'll suck it up and ride my bike to work so she doesn't have to be without a car.
good news is selling the car left me with $1700 towards a new bike fund too as well as being free and clear debt wise...
Times are tough, no doubt. I've done the bike as transportation thing when I was a starving college student. It's tough. If you get a cold, it takes a LONG time to get over it. Hey, gotta do what ya gotta do. Windshield makes all the difference. Good gear is essential in weather. Lucky for me, I do have the car for the really nasty stuff. Still ride the bike in winter, just not the extremes. Be safe.
Rode in 35F weather today and it wasn't too bad although I just rode about 10 miles each way to get a haircut and back. Had on just jeans, boots, t-shirt, gloves and leather jacket with a fleece neck warmer and skid lid on (oh yea and boxer shorts and socks for those who are wondering haha)but no thermal underwear like i normally wear. My face and hands got a little chilly but honestly it was kinda nice.
Too Cold - adjective: from French (merde). 1. A condition afflicting motorcyclists in the United States, caused by cold Arctic air flowing South out of Canada and forcing them to park their machines indoors until the swallows return to Capistrano. 2. Temperatures sufficiently low so as to turn ureters into tiny icicle blowguns.
