I live in the high desert outside L.A. Around 3 pm it got to 60 degrees so I saddled up my Dyna. It's nice and quiet in the desert with straight roads for the most part.
I decided to take the 2 lane that runs parellel to the north side of the San Gabriel mountains. Riding east to west the mountains were on my left and about 6 to 8 miles away. The road kind of rolls along like the easy part of a roller coaster with quick short hills one after another for several miles. The mountains continue on down to L.A about 80 miles away.
The snow is down to 4,000 ft so the mountain tops were covered. The big pines up there looked black against all that white.
At sunset the sketchy clouds in the sky turned a brilliant crimson behind the mountains. I've seen alot of sunsets but never one like this. I had to pull over because I couldn't keep my eyes on the road.
I walked out into the Joshua trees for a better view. There was no sound. None at all. After a few minutes I began thinking how alone I was out there. It was getting cold so I got back on my bike. As I started it up I took one last look at the mountains and that fiery sky and thought... No, I am not alone.
Far more eloquent then I could (would?) ever write. However since moving here last March I have to say the sunsets here in the southwest are incredible.
