I sold an '08 FatBoy and bought an '03 RKC. best move I've made. I don't ride fast enought to warrant the 6 speed, and don't miss the little hp and torque the 96 had.

If you have the cash and it ain't no thing go for the new bike.. If it were me, I'd buy the 03, upgrade to the hyd. cam tensioners, and spent some of the $ you saved on whatever you want to customize to make the bike yours. The 88 vs 96 isn't much difference unless you're looking to be a stoplight hero (and if so the 96 needs a lot of $ thrown at it too). Biggest thing is the 6th gear if you do a lot of high speed interstate hauls. I have an 04 classic and have no desire to go newer. Only wish for the 6spd sometimes but I saved so much $ over buying new that i would do it again in a heartbeat.

I bought an '03 Ultra several years ago that was upgraded to a 95" motor w/ the upgraded cam tensioners.....best bike I have ever owned. Have ridden stock and bult up '09s/'10s last summer, and there is no comparision!!!!

The money you should save will more than pay for the upgrades that you will need to do, and you will have a better bike in the end.

Also....did several long distance rides, including an 1000 mi Iron Butt Ride on my '03 Ultra w/ other riders....and had no real issues w/ the 5-spd tranny....pretty much if you don't know what you're missing...you're not missing it.

I was also looking at a 03, ended up with a 2010 Limited. Listen, the 03 is great bike I loved everthing about. Fit like a glove. Dealer sold it out from under me. I bought the Limited same weekend from a different dealer of course. 1st. and number 1 difference in the 2 bikes you need to study are ABS breaks. As of right now I would not own a bike without them. The 2010 is wider more stable and extremely well balanced. You will not believe how well the bike handles once you learn to trust it. Low speed manuverability is much better on the 2010 it's a big difference. 103 motor has more than enough power and with a simple exhaust change will open it up nicely. Good luck. Let us know which one get and why.
