Default Remember Exposed Push-rods

Anyway I remember as a kid back in 1955. Sitting at a stop light. Looking out the passenger window of my Grandfathers car, A Bike was sitting at the light next to us. The Push rods were exposed moving up and down and spinning as going up and down. Does any one know what year Engine and what model bike. Harley or Indian or both. Never seen one in years. Was told years ago it was a Harley S engine from the 20,s to1930's. That you had to carry a oil can to oil the push rods. I GOTS TO KNOW. Thanks

I believe all the 74 inch "JD" engines from the 1920's had the exposed pushrods (along with side shift)..

I have a curious nature about engines myself. While I don't actually remember those models, just lookin at the pictures posted makes me want to tear one open just to see how the exhaust side operates...

I do remember the old diesel engines used in submarines that had the entire valve train exposed for maintenance tho.

The exhaust side is a side valve or Flathead, just like an old Briggs and Stratton lawnmower rig. It is next to the cylinder. The intake valve is OH.

Thanks, most appreciated! Some reason my moronic imagination was thinkin of a side port of some type. Still like to tear it down just for fun.

Nor sure of the year of the engine in this pic but it is being run daily by some older gent in Europe some where.

Even the first few 1936 Knucks had exposed pushrods. Oiling still happened via the oil pump, though.
