I take a Coleman dome, fits in my tourpak. I think it was on sale for $35. Save alot of money, I camped at a nice campground on my way thru Idaho $4 bucks. On the other hand the state campgrounds here in Ca went up to $25, Camped by Hoover dam on lake Mead for $10
Hover damn by lake mead is some nice camping... Used to live in Vegas and went out there a lot.
Nobody here has ever spent a night in a modern canvas tent. The Springbar Compact 2000 is a great high end two person tent for motorcycle camping. Check it out a www.springbar.com. The canvas tent is 100% waterproof (more waterproof than some motels I have been in!), cool in hot weather, impervious to winds, single wall construction (you do not need a rainfly), fast to set up and break down, and 100% made in America. Kind of retro cool, like Harley Davidson, in fact you might say that Springbar is the Harley Davidson of tents. The drawback compared to an REI three person dome style tent is more weight. The canvas tent weighs about 20 lbs compared to 12 pounds for the equivalent sized nylon dome tent, the extra weight is why they are not popular with backpackers. There is one other drawback in that the Springbar tent must be staked into the ground, it cannot stand up by itself. I used to think this was a problem until I discovered that I could use lag screws for stakes, they will go through asphalt...Check out the Springbar tents. I love the security of knowing I will be dry and comfortable in any weather.
If I wasn't a computer neanderthal I would post a picture or a direct link...
And here's my campsite, with beautiful views of the lake and the Mackinaw Bridge during my trip to the U.P. last year. I love camping off the bike, to me it feels like much more of an adventure than hotel-ing. But, it does suck to have to carry so much more stuff.
I have a 2 person Eureka tent with a Thermorest pad and a Wenger sleeping bag. Works well, but I also like to alternate nights in a motel, depending on the weather.
All this talk about tent is making F**king wish winter was over... I want to go for a long ride then have a few drinks next to a nice camp fire then sleep in a tent under the stars...
OK I will quit my bitching

we use canvass for the scouts. they last forever, and they are quite sturdy. i have never found one light enough for my motorcycle camping. i just checked the springboard site, and their lightest is 25lbs. that is over 4 times what i will allow for my tent. you will however be the happiest camper in a rain, or hailstorm.
