I would tune it up, keep it, and ride it a bit. It's way too nice and clean to just "chop" up. JMHO

I'd think I get her running smooth and clean her up and wait till spring, probably get atleast 1k more than selling now and running rough..

If the most you are going to get is maybe 2-3k..just keep it and turn it into a seventies style chopper. At's what I'd do.

If yer looking to restore a sportster, that one wouldn't be my first choice. 60's or early 70's one would be far more interesting, and have some value when you were done. As far as fixing it and making money off of it (a profit), it ain't gonna happen

My Spring of 08 edition of Vintage Motorcyes shows a condition three at $4,200 and a condition two at $5,600.

Looking at the pictures, it could be a condition two.

The market may have went down for collector bikes is the past year, but that ride has good value. But, the best place to get the price is a collector bike auction.

Hang on to it. It is a winner.

Around here, if it was running right, about $3500.00 tops. Since it is running rough, I'd say about $2500.00 to about $2800.00.
V-Twin carries alot of aftermarket stuff which fits '79-'82. Aftermarket pipes are about the only thing that you have to search for due to the rear master cylinder placement. Other than that, everything else is fairly easy to find.
Did you mean electric start only (XLH)? I do not see a kickstarter (XLCH).

Whatever it's worth now, it will be worth more in the spring. Rough running hopefully just fuel system needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Do that, (whether you keep it or not it should be done) wait 'till spring try to sell. If ya can't get what ya want keep it. My US$.02 Actually it looks nice to me.
