about to be a first time harley owner (and i'm excited as an 8 year old at christmas). i'm leaning toward a road king and will test ride a dyna, softail and road king. i live in socal. will be doing daytrips or weekend trips to big bear, joshua tree, etc. 250-300 miles roundtrip overnite. sometimes solo. sometimes 2 up. the dealer is pushing the dyna. aggressively. anyone know why that would be?
Either they are overstocked on Dyna's or they can make the most profit on certain Dyna models. If I was a betting man, I would venture that they are overstocked.
With the kind of riding you are going to do I would test ride a ElectraGlide.More protection from the Santa Anna winds, more comfort for your lady also.
Do yourself a favor and check ebay and craigslist for a good used Touring model, they are 20-30 percent less cost and lots of them are very low miles. I have a dyna and it would be a stretch to get two people and luggage on that, I barely have enough room for my own stuff on a 3-4 day trip.
He may be suggesting the Dyna as it's your first HD. Many people think you start with a smaller bike if it's your first HD. How many bikes have you owned and what types. I don't care if their metric just trying to get a better understanding of your abilities.
If you've rode quite a bit and have had many miles of experience regardless of what brand then get a bagger. Many will buy a sport bike and try and turn it into a bagger. So cut through the chase and get the bagger.

Dynas are not good bikes for two up trips. If you're planning many of those, RK or, even better, ElectraGlide.
What? Come one. They aren't 883's. Dyna's are great bikes for 200-300 mile trips. Are they as comfy ar an Ultra, no. But for new riders, a Dyna with windshield, bags and backrest are a great choice for short trips like that. They are way cheaper to boot.
Dynas are great bikes...I love mine. BUT, by the time you add bags, windshield, a back rest for your better half, etc., you may as well get a Heritage. It's ready to go right off the showroom floor.
