If your budget will allow, go for Wesco (West Coast boots). They cost and arm, a leg, and possible a ********, but they will be the last pair you ever buy. You can customize them for your foot, so they are ultra comfortable.
Wesco is truly the hands down best, can be custom made for your tooties for an additional $95.... I wear Red Wing Engineers now, bummer they're made in China now, but a fine boot nonetheless. Chippewa are still made in the US, but they've been having some quality issues lately.
My lower legs and ankles swell every once in a while and I've been wearing these lace up Corcoran boots with a zipper. They are easy to put on and take off without having to unlace. They can be worn as tightly as you want to.
Do you have any idea how often I had to spit shine those things?!?! Never again ...
Harley-Davidson Side Lights ... best boot I've ever owned. The zipper up on the inner side of each boot. The straps adjust to give you plenty of support. They won't some off and leave you without defense. Plenty protection in case your SO decides to kick you under the table.

(shudders)
I would never want to wear Corcorans again. If I did, my brainwashing would not be able to let them go 'chocolate bar', and I ain't getting out the cotton diapers and Kiwi at this point in my life.
There is a company here in my town that makes damn good boots. They've been in business since 1934. They are high quality, built to last. They make six different biker boot styles. I have a pair of short shifts, which I wear most of the time. My Daytons are comfortable, but not as easy to get on as my Vibergs.
I have several pairs of riding boots, everything from H-D stuff and Xelement to a great pair of Chippewa Engineers. I only wear safety because my riding boots are my work boots, day in, day out, all year long. My favorite lace up's are the H-D "Gregarious" with steel toe and I like em fine. If you want steel toe, check your local safety boot store and see what they carry in H-D boots. I picked mine up at Mr.Safety Shoes here in Canada for a lot less than what the dealer was asking. Theyre decent boots. The leather is OK, maybe not the best I've ever had but it breaks in nicely over time and really comes around if you use a good conditioner like Montanas Pitch Blend or even Sno Seal. I've had them re-soled once with the classic Vibram "Logger" sole and they are really holding up very well.

Have to say I'm a big fan of Sidi motorcycle boots. I have two pairs. They are made for riding with ankle support and protection and a stiffend sole and toe top that is not too thick and give lots of feedback for shifting and braking pedal feel. The On-Road Gortex which is waterproof enough to wade in and fairly protective and the lace up Doha motorcycle short boot which is more like an armored high cut sneaker. I wear the Dohos off the bike too as they are fairly comfortable and look like normal footwear. Got them both at www.newenough.com. BTW they will donate $1 to this site with every purchase, you specify the site on checkout. They are not the cheapest boots but the quality is awesome.
