FLSTCI here, and I run my bike 70-80 on the highway all the time. Bike runs smooth with little to no vibration. I think some people comment on the little buzz you can get through the softail frame at speed, which is noticable, but not an annoyance. I would rather have my bike buzz a little at 80 mph then have the engine feel like it wants to jump out of the frame at idle (MHO).
I have ridden approximately 10K miles on the 2006 RK with Stage 1 and Screamin' Eagle exhaust. I picked up my 2007 Peace Officer Edition RK four days ago and have ridden approximately 500 miles on it. My opinion is go with the RK because the 2007 upgrades make it a really comfortable bike to ride. I am 5'11 so I recently changed the handle bars out to the Heritage bars and a Tallboy seat with a backrest for the wife. The bike is really smooth at highway speeds and the sixth gear is only useful for about 60-65 and above otherwise it lugs. The new gearing is really nice. The motor is smoother than the 2006 at highway speeds, I don't know if it is because of the gearing or because of the internal upgrades, but whatever they did its smooooth. The only time I get vibration is when I slow down and stop at a light, which is fine because IT'S A HD [8D]. The wife says its really comfortable. I personally like the RK because of the visibility of just having the windshield and how cool (temperature) it is without the fairing. Good Luck with your decision.... like the other people have said it's your decision. Highly recommend renting a bike if possible.
Thanks for all the replys,........Well,... if I was just considering a bike for me alone, the new 07 Fatboy would win hands down, cause Damn that new 07 sure is sweet looking, but since I gotta, "somewhat" consider the Mrs. I'm leaning a little more towards the Road King. I guess I could always get the Fatboy and put a *** killing seat on for her and after one ride she wouldn't have the thought of riding with me off her mind anymore,........LOL Thats probably not an option at all since she is paying for half. But I guess I really need to also find a bike that will fit us both as well, I'm 6-02, 205, and the wife is 6-00, 180. Damn she would kick my butt if she knew I posted her size,...LOL. Actually, the ride on my superglide is good with both of us but we are just a lil bit cramped and I think the worst part for her is that her legs are up a little to high for her to be comfortable. Something that would allow her feet to go a little lower would greatly increase her comfort I think.
My wife rides a Heritage and vibration is not an issue up to 80 or 85. It is a little more than a Rubber Mounted engine, but nothing that is intrusive.
I would go with the RoadKing for issues other than vibration. The King is rubbermounted, so it is going to be a little smoother, it has air shocks and better suspension than the Softails, and it has a little more preceived power because there is no power being used to spin counterbalancers.
The biggest issue however is ground clearance. The Fatboy, Heritage, etc is going to touch down in the curves al ot sooner than the Roadking is. You, being used to a Dyna, are probably going to find this to be a real issue.
I bought my fist bike a 04 xlc1200 a couple years ago. I could get the wife on it a couple times a year but she always complained it was uncomfortable and hated to ride. I just traded that for a 03 flhrci. What a diffrence.
I know I went from a sporty to a Road King. But she loves to ride now. Just the other night she asked me to take her for a ride! I'm glad I went to the Road King because now she is comfortable and will go for rides. I never thought she would be into motorcycles the way she is now. The only bad part about that is I wanted to get a solo seat. Now that she wants to ride it's gonna be hard to talk her into spending the money.
with both of you being tall, I would think the Roadie or EG, or Ultra..
My wife is 5'6", I'm 6'...I really like my Heritage but it is just a tad short for me and the wife gets cramped after about an hour. I have found it can be really expensive when you start looking for after market options to let the passenger stretch out.
Maybe the two of you can go together and throw a leg over a few, I wish I had done that with my wife.
