I used a green, almost military olive colored etching primer by duplicolor and it worked great. I sanded with 400 first then primered it, then lightly scuffed it with 600 and then painted it gloss black. it worked fine but this was my rear turn signal bar and turn signals....they dont see much handling or chips from rocks....but it worked for me.

Time will tell as far as the adhesion goes... but like was mentioned before... primers are open to the elements and need to be sealed, but I don't know that I would put clear right on top of primer. You could put a single stage paint on top and have a flattener add to the paint if you're looking for a matte finish.

There are also some spraybombs out there that give a nice matt finish
Ment for blacking out chrome i just cant think of the name of the one we used to use
but it had a real nice low gloss finish
