Default Self-Etching Primer

I'm painting my chrome black. I sanded the pieces, cleaned them, and hit them with some black Self-Etching Primer. They look great just the way they are now. My question is can I leave the primer exposed like it is, or do I need to cover it with paint and a sealer?

Hi Russell6hp,
You need to top coat self ecthing with something, if the self etching primer gets wet it will lose its self etch / corrosion protection properties.

Good Luck

Further more it does not carry the same characteristics as a top coat does, so its not made to endure the elements.

Chrome is a hard plated finish so did you sand of all the chrome? I think that is the only way to have the primer bond well. Primer is not a finish coating so it does have to be sealed and you could just clear over it to seal.I hope this works for out for you and I will just keep my chrome shinny !

I do agree with Flyin, Chrome is a hard finish. Depending on how it was prepped, most likely it will look decent for awhile but it may flake within time do to poor adhesion. We usually will either run a fine quick blast to the chrome or send it to the chrome shop & have it dechromed.

primer is porous so it lets moisture in. You could get a flat black paint with good sealing properties. You could even buy "Hammered metal" spray paint! It looks pretty cool in the right places.

You need to not only cover it with "something" - you need to cover it with primer, base coat and clear, or primer and a single stage. Unless you used a DTM (direct to metal) primer, which is both the etch primer and primer.

If you like the look of the primer, you could shoot a base coat that's the same color as the primer, the clear with a flat clear.

Time will tell as far as the adhesion goes... but like was mentioned before... primers are open to the elements and need to be sealed, but I don't know that I would put clear right on top of primer. You could put a single stage paint on top and have a flattener add to the paint if you're looking for a matte finish.

What always worked for me painting over chrome was a good sanding, then two coats of stove paint.A couple of heat cycles cured it,amazingly it lasted a very long time, I mean years.
