Default Motor is done!

But to bad 10" of snow today!

Went yesterday to pay my balance and got to hear the cams. I am actually surprised how much you can hear them. I didnt think such a mild 203 cam would sound that good but they do. Bad news is my bike is stuck there until the weather breaks. At least he's cool about it and aint making me rent an enclosed to get it home.

New rear tire
shift shaft seal repaired
new rear pads
new inspection plate cover (mine was bent a little)
203 cams

All set for 2010

Last year we rode on March 1. Dont see it happening this year.

Sorry about the weather but glad it's not what I was assuming when I read your thread title, "Motor is done!" That could be taken two ways!

Hope you get to try it out soon.

Almost went with the 203's,, just didn't,,, ended up with 26h's last spring, there fairly close,, son has had two bikes now with the 204's,, Duece and a NT... he loves those on the lighter bikes. they really talk to Ya at idle.

Enjoy the new power,, U'll love it,,, plus they will also usually give even better mileage than the EPA stockers...

Doesn't that jus' kill ya, when ya see it ???? WTF, Chuck ??? In my deranged mind, IF I am getting more miles to the gallon, I am using the fuel MORE efficiently. Again, WTF, Chuck ???

Glad it's ready to Rock 'n Roll, for ya.
BUT, ALL hot to trot, and NO Place to race !!!!!

Cams make a great difference... sound, power. I put SE 255's in mine last October and had it dyno'd. MPG went down a little. More power, more gas even if it is tuned. I know some guys who say they get better gas mileage. Maybe their bikes were not tuned. Normally stock is running too lean, so if you richen it, it tends to use more gas. I just changed my slip ons and had it returned. Bike is set for 12.8-13.0 WOT but is set for 14.6 in the cruise range. Haven't been able to ride it since I changed the pipes. Will see what the gas mileage is when I can again get out. The other problem with getting cams is that you tend to get on the throttle a little more... just feels so good!

If the bike is running more efficiently, making more power but the rider isn't running it any harder than they were before the mods, I can see them getting a little better mpg's as the engine is running easier.

OTOH, if you use that power, and who doesn't at least a little, then you're mpg's are going down. There is no free lunch but if the tune is proper and the rider conservative, there's no reason not to get at least as good mpg's after the mods as you got before, maybe ever little better!

JMO!

I thought the same thing. Good thing I was wrong! It would be nice to get a little run in to shake it down and make sure everything is right before real riding weather gets here.

Dont know about others, mine was dyno tuned at 1K along with the stg1, and again after the cams at 16k. In fact it was tuned twice after the cams, didn't want to decell right.. seemed to run on a little when I let off the throttle, no decell. So they spent another 2hrs on her.

My dynos sheets are in the softail area Dynos for softails in the sticky area,, Its the 1st sticky thread on page I , its the first post of the thread....also the A/F ratio is also on the bottom of each sheet.. Neither goes about 13.8
heres the link..
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/softa...-softails.html

I've stated in a bunch of past post that pre-cams I always got best mileage in 5th at 55mph... and it was that way for the first 16k miles (even with the Stg1/Dyno at 1k) fuel mileage was usually 39-42 mpg.

I tried 6th gear a bunch of times in the first 16k but the motor always felt sluggish and she labored like she was under a load, even at 65...On a couple runs at 60-65mph riding solo I used 6th just to check the fuel mileage, it dropped to 37-39...

After the cams where installed 8k ago, she will now pull 60 mph and above easy in 6th gear, even two up, motor now feels free and not sluggish, and will get 42-44 mpg all day long..Solo 44-45mpg.

Yes, on the average most of our riding is in the country,, mostly 30-45mph and using 3rd-4th gear. 50% or less on state roads, 0% on ineterstates...
Seldom over 3500prms so Yes I'd say Grandma and I just usually putt....

Some may think I go overboard on records, but being retired and keeping records used to be one of my jobs,, I have a spreedsheet that has all and everything I do to the bike, and one of them is keeping a gas log and mileage record...Thats why I can say with confidence what she used to get and what she is now getting. And with the cams she's averaged 2mpg better...

I will say a couple of times right after I had the cams put in I rode with and (tried) to keep up with my son's NT. I rode her as hard and as fast as I have ridden in a long time... On those two rides we rode long enough to go through a tank of fuel and the mileage dropped to 37-38 mpg...

The tuner at INDY North said the increase in mileage is because the motor is now more efficient and its not unusual for it to be better if U don't twist Ur right hand a lot..
