JackD, I did the same thing when I was in Colorado. Local dealer did not want to deal and actually wanted to low ball me on my trade. I said F@#K Ya and went about two and a half hours away and got the bike that I wanted for MSRP and a good price on my trade. Made the deal over the phone as well and said I am coming almost three hours away to make the deal so don't disappoint me and they didn't. They were a new dealership at the time and wanted to get customers in and sell bikes. The local dealer was arrogant and had enough people buying 3,000 over MSRP that they did not have to deal. Never went back to that dealer for ****. Good feeling.
Whe we bought the '07 EGC we have now in 2006, we were dealing with 2 local dealers. They were $1K apart on trade-in and 3 points on interest rate(both going through H-D finance). I gave the one who was giving me less for my trade-in and the extra 3 points a chance to meet the deal from the other one. The salesman said they couldn't and the 3 points is how they made their money. I was signing papers at other dealer 45 minutes after talking to him.
We went back next week on the new bike when brother came into town. The sales & general manager called me into the office to ask "What did we do wrong to lose your business?". I explained to them what the deal was and my wife came into the room and said, "It came down to we were talking about real money coming out of our pocket."
They said they understood and have since asked me to next time give them another chance when(and if) I decide to trade again. I will look at them and anyone else. But the one who saves us money, gets my business.
I have to laugh when I see this stuff...I once went out of State 250 miles to buy a boat that was in a bankruptcy/divorce proceeding and was given away ( it was 6 months old). It was get this $70,000.00 cheaper than a new one at my dealer. and when I brought it home my dealer was insulted that I didn't buy from them....now you can all guess what I told them to go do.....
I bought a new '09 Heritage in August just when the new '10 models were being shipped. I got it for less than MSRP at a dealer 40 miles from home. Local dealership was still $2K over MSRP on the 09's.
Just gotta shop araound.

Example with saved 4K shows that dealers make around 5K on Ultras. Dealer which sold bike 4K cheaper had to make at least 1K.
I do have to say that my $4k savings was on a used bike, but it was a savings of the 4K, plus additions to the bike over what the local stealer had offered me. If you throw in the cost of the Zepplin seat and SE Stage 1 air and pipes, it was more than 4K. The local stealer was up against this with a bone stock. the only compromise I had to give in on was extra mileage on the one I got, but that was not bad in my eyes.
