Default Sportser problem

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum.

I have just recently bought a 53 plate 2004 1200 sportser custom (my first Harley)

Had a couple of ****les, and just thought this would be a good place to ask people with experience!

First one is twice now my speedo has stopped working whilst riding along the road, and second my engine light came on (same time as the second speedo incident) I stopped riding for a min, then fired the bike back up, and everything was fine again - which makes me think of electral maybe?

I got home tonite, then plugged it into my optimiser, and the voltage was down to 13 volts, and it had been up at 14.1 before i got on the bike. (an hour before)

Does anyone know what the problem could be? Is it linked to the battery? (my lights n stuff were still working when my speedo stopped)

Thanks in advance for any help you can give

cheers

Steph

Start by making sure your battery cables are tight (both ends).
Also search this forum for diag codes, the post will have procedure for cheking error codes, and what they mean.

First, I suggest you post this over in the Sportster Section. At the top of that section is a thread labeled "Helpful DIY's" that will tell you how to read the diagnostic codes out of the computer.

Second, what the hell is a "53 plate 2004 1200 sportser custom"?

Oh, and welcome to the fourm........

i think this guy is from the UK and the 53 relates to the UK registration plates - can't remember what year this would be for but around 2006 (?). The following year it would change to 54. look something like this GU 53 121YX

Check for the obvious, like the tight connections the others have mentiomed. After that, the first thing I would suspect is the solid-state voltage regulator. Make sure it is plugged in, although it is not uncommon for one of that age to give out.

I had my speedo stop working once in the middle of a ride. Turned out my front tire was REAL LOW (leaky valve stem). Once I fixed the tire, no problem. That being said, I don't have any idea why there would be a connection between the two, or if in fact there was....

Maybe the speedo stopped because you weren't moving?

C'mon dude, you live around the corner from me....let's ride sometime! We can make it a short ride of only a couple hundred!?!

I'd get it checked by a reputable dealer, engine management can be a number of thing's,

For our friends across the pond 53 plate refers to a bike registered between Sept 2003 and March 2004, a bike registered between March 2004 and Sept 2004 would have a plate 04, after Sept of 2004 to March 2005 would have a plate 54, Mad eh !!

Negative Battery cable at the battery side. I almost guarantee it!
