I have the SYJ and it will let down slowly. Just takes practice Using the minimum amount of torque to close the valve helps. On a side note I found most of the button head bolts that hold the rear wheel brackets on were loose the other day. I've had mine about 3 years.
I have a Harbor Frieght jack that does the same thing -- nearly impossible to let it down slow. You'r supposed to fully depress the floor pedal on the jack for slow lowering (which is NOT intuitive). First time I tried it I my FXST hit the floor so suddenly I lost it and it fell against my '98 Mustang GT, the handlebars putting a sizable dent in the passengers side door. Oh well, lesson learned.
I learned real quick to twist the handle ever so slightly to lower the bike down sloooow on my SYJ. One thing that might help if it is a new SYJ is to have someone stand on the lift while you run the jack up and down a few times to pump up the fluid. Back in my mechanic days we always pre primed the shocks before installation. Prevented dead air zones.
