I'm getting a windshield for my bike for long trips. Anyone know what to look out for when getting a shield? How high does it have to be? Should I get it in any kind of tint or clear?
This is the shield I am getting, custom sizes/tints are available, what do you guys think?
its such a personal choice i cant stand looking through them so i get them so i can look over the top but i ride with some who look through them it the only wrong hight is when the top is right in your sight line.
You will want to peek over the top.
Seriously consider Memphis Shades.
Can't. My bike is a Night Rod Special. This is the only company that makes a shield/mounting kit for my bike. The other windshield available is from Harley and that one is total garbage as it's too short.
This what I did. Found the measurements of the shields I was interested in. Actual length from headlight up. Added .5 inch to measurements and marked it on a piece of cardboard. Then sat on bike and found one that worked. Ended up buying a National Cycle. What I liked was, it is detachable and lockable and if I want to add a lightbar, all I have to do is swap out 2 mounting brackets for factory HD lights.
I bet Windvest has something that will mount to your handlebars, call them and tell 'em what you have. Knowing your handlebar dimensions will help.
They make a great product. The design actually flips most things right over your head and you don't look through them, you look over the top.
Not cheap but protecting my ugly mug is important to me.
FYI...I don't know all the details but whatever they make the Windvest out of is pretty tough stuff.
I got peppered really hard yesterday from a gravel/sand truck, we were both doing 70 in opposite directions on a 2 lane road. The kind of stuff that stings every inch of skin not leathered and makes you look for paint damage when you stop. It's not the first time and won't be the last. My Windvest still looks pretty darn good after 2 years and since you don't look through it any small blemish wouldn't bother you anyway.
Really a quality product....
