Another option would be to buy a trailer to haul your bike and sell it when you get where your going.
The 2x6 or 2x8 with eye bolts is a good option but I would screw a 2x4 the full length of the bike on either side of the tires to keep the 2x6 with the eye bolts from kicking out frontwards or backwards.
Thanks for your service and good luck with the move.

I don't know who told you that, but I rented an open trailer from them and moved from Indiana to North Carolina with it. Just rent one of the open types that you can fit your bike on. Don't tell them what your using it for, just your destination. There are plenty of places to hook straps.

This is from uhauls site.

5' x 9' Ramp Utility Trailer

EZ load ramp. Great for hauling motorcycles & golf carts.
This trailer is available to rent cross country or cross town.

Why don't you just get a U-Haul trailer and pull it with the bike?

I don't know how far your going, but look into a professional bike shipper, it may not be as pricey as you think.

Personally, after the ordeal with Haul bikes, I will never ship a bike again, unless I have no other options. It took 2 months, cost over $500 dollars, banged up my fender, refused to pay for it(cost me $400 for a new fender). When I did get the bike it was absolutely filthy and the battery was drained. I would have been ahead at least 400, had I rented a trailer.

I have a open 5x10 trailer! Hauled a 750 Honda on it ! Hauled fine a couple times but, once on a curve Tipped right the **** over!! But when I bought the Heritage 140 miles away in the spring of 06......it was cold- rain, than rain-cold! So it was killing me! Let it sit at the shop for 2 weeks finally had to get it! Let the dealer strap it down! Did the left /right thing! He also strapped the front wheel tight to the front of the trailer!! Never moved a inch the 140 mile haul back!! I stopped and checked it every 25 miles or so!!

Just pay someone to ship it! My dad just shipped his bike from okalhoma to AZ and and the guy showed up at my house in less than 24 hour hours. Bike was perfect and in a covered trailer w two ferraris. Only cost $400 can't beat that in my book.

When we move we last time we used a U-Haul or similar truck to move our house hold goods. The last time I moved I did not have my HD. I had a metric. I just positioned it up against my tool box (Covered of course) and strapped it down the best I could. This resulted in a few scratches. My HD Ultra Classic weighs double that of my old bike and I do not feel comfortable just having it on its Kick stand with no really good way to strap it down. I am not able to mount anything in the floor of the rented moving truck. I thought about renting the motorcycle trailer they carry, however they cannot be taken to a different state they are for local moves only. So I need your Ideas as to how to move it safely. Once again thanks for all your advice.

The weight of the bike holds it down, park in 1st gear and lock the front brake. You'll arrive just fine. Ask me how I know ;-)
Yeah, nail the 2x6 right to the wooden floor of the u-haul too, for good measure. People do it all the time. Or if ya want, I'll ride it to Vegas for ya.
