Been riding since the 70's. Never owned a Goldwing. I'm just basing my opinions on all the time I spend helping my HD riding friends get their bikes going, or waiting on a buddy with a trailer.
It's nice your experience was different. Nice that you were one of the lucky few Harley riders back then who didn't have those problems. Had Harley managed to make a few more decent bikes than the two you had, they wouldn't have earned such a bad reputation and almost gone out of business.
You sound like a frustrated AMF rider blindly defending the pieces of crap Harley used to crank out.
I guess it's time to weigh in. I too am one of the lucky few. My first bike was an 82 roadster, which technically was still AMF. Ive been riding harleys ever since - actually, never rode anything else and never want to. all except my last bike, which happens to be a 74 AMF FLH, were purchased new. I never had any problems to speak of, oil included, and yes, I do ride my bikes.
a for the "as long as your in the wind crowd, it doesn't matter". well, if that were true, I guess I'd enjoy mowing my lawn a lot more.
PS - if it weren't for AMF, you probably wouldn't be riding your WG. think about it.
Have to agree with Pied Piper about AMF - also if it wasn't for all the brit-italian and especially the jap bikes none of us would probably be riding any kind of 2 wheeler today.
Being a 35 year member of the AMA, I saw all kinds of anti bike legislation and down right bike bans come down the pike.
Also have to thank the AMA, ABATE and other biker rights organizations.
We all have to stick together whether you like foreign bikes or not - we do NEED each other against a lot more bike haters(civilian and political).
Remember strength in numbers. United we stand or divide we fall.
I can give a **** if somebody doesn't like or hates Harleys, if you want to take it up with me face to face lets go. Why some of you guys appologize for the haters I don't know, I don't see anything where I live to appologize for, far as I'm concerned the biggest idiots on the road are people in cars on cell phones and moped riders that ride like thier trying to comit suicide.
My eighteen year old son has been around Harleys all his life and has had so many mountaintop experiences along the way. Imagine my surprise when I learn he has no enthusiasm for Harley Davidson bikes and is fascinated with crotch-rockets. It's got to be a generational thing. Second to the rice-burners, his choice would be a Buell.

The main thing is to seek your own mantra and not hum the wrong tune all yer life? If you can find your own serenity then what can be the difference what sort of machine you choose? A lifetime is but, a moment in the big picture and it all doesn't seem to matter all that much after the services are over?
Back in 2007 my son (now 31) decided to get a bike and he nver said a word to me about it. He just showed up one day on a new dyna that he rode for a year and then traded it in on a Street Glide which he has managed to put around 18,000 miles on. His friends ride mostly metrics but, when he decided to get a bike he bought what he wanted.
I always like to think that if I were as rich as I could be how many different bikes I would have? I have 4 right now but, I'm game to have several more if my lottery tickets come in. LOL
Some guys hate whatever brand of bike they don't own...
10 years ago, I was riding a 1979 XS 650 yamaha, which was my pride & my joy, one of the best bike I ever have had, I bought that bike with 20,000 kms on the odometer, she was already 21 years old. What a beauty!
I used to go riding with two friends and do some café rides. Wherever I parked my bike, I was directly surrounded by people admiring my bike, while no one looked at one of my friends VN800. He got that pissed that he told me to buy another bike, he couldn't stand that situation.
I told him to f*ck off, paid for my coffee and left, I never rode again with that moron.
Now that I'm riding a H-D, I've understood I'd better ride alone, this is what I do...
