You might not ever 'need' a weapon, but in todays world violent situations can happen at almost any time, at any place.

Over the years I've been shot 3 times (not including my time in the military), and being shot isn't a pleasant experience, to say the least.

But to carry, or not, is a personal decision that each person needs to make for themselves.

Hmmm...I don't know, ever heard of anybody getting shot, stabbed, raped, robbed, etc. at a rally. Seems like I've heard of things like that. Bad things happen sometimes - whether those people had a gun or not, they sure needed one. I'd rather be the guy who has it and doesn't need it, than the guy who needs it and doesn't have it.

I've carried a gun since I was 21 (when I got my first police job). I'm an instructor certified by multiple agencies and private companies, I teach "use of force" law to police and my wife and I shoot in competition and teach competitive and defensive pistol shooting. I'd feel pretty stupid if I got killed or hurt because I didn't bring my gun to a gun fight (or knife fight, or baseball bat fight, etc.)

Ditto on that! I traditionally shoot a full-size 1911, and the subcompact size is perfect for me. Plus, that also equals same ammo all the way around.

The subcompact 1911 still has some good size on it, so I haven't even tried using a ankle holster for it. That seems to be pretty popular with LCPs, etc, but those are so small, I can hardly work them. So, as a backup, I carry a couple of knives with me at all times. One in an ankle holster, and another more "normal" pocket knife.

I have seen people carry the full sized 1911, but the weight it has is just too much for me...I can't seem to adjust well. Comfort is always an issue...

I carry a full sized XD45 or S&W 1911 in my vest and/or a Kel-Tek 380 in my back pocket all of the time

No offense OldFenderGuy, but if you've been shot multiple times during the years, the decision to carry when riding might be the least of your worries. It's good that you're still around to tell the story.

Same is true for a helmet. You may never need it, but when you do you'll be glad you have it on. Of course, you'll get the guys on here that say if you're so scared that you might need your helmet you may as well stay home. I guess the same could be said about carrying a sidearm?

P.S.- Where do you hang out to have been shot 3 times?

What do you folks canceling do when you go to a state that doesnt recognise your states CWL? What do you do with your weapon in these cases? We will be traveling to Sturgis this summer and Wyoming doesnt recognize Washington's CW permit.

Thanks, This threads been fun!!
