Ok, so a many-moons-later update:

The car market isnt the only things thats soft around here...it appears the job market is too, and I got pink-slipped not long after the start of this thread.

It all but killed the HD dream. But, now (of course the Deuce is loooong gone) my business is doing well, and I have a night job that actually covers my mortgage payment, so I am lookng again.

I posted my Hot rods ad again on Craigslist, and whats funny is that the guy with the original Special Construction contacted me right away. I looked into the insurance and sure enough, its crazy expensive. I have been lurking around the Sportster side of the forums and have haunted my local dealer from time to time, and while I still love the 48, I gotta say that the Nightster really lights me up. I'm not certain exactly why...could be that it looks old-school, like something my dad would have ridden bac in the day. So I sent a bunch of "lets trade toys" e-mails to a bunch of people that had listed them for sale locally.

I got an e-mail tonight from a woman with a 2005 Softail Custom. Clean 17K miles, perfect burgandy-ish paint and lots of chrome...and a seat that looks like its right outta the Lazy-Boy showroom. Nice bike, books high according to KBB and she is willing. NUTS! So, now I'm thinking, 'well, I don't really have time to do extended rides, and the bike (whatever I get) MIGHT be for just when I have an hour or so during the day, and MIGHT take it the 40ish miles round trip to my night job, and would definately be cheaper to commute than my Grand Cherokee, so, mabye I grab the softail and trade it for a newer Nightster or 48...

Gawd, I don't know what to do anymore. WHAT A YEAR!

You would trade a Softail custom for a sporty? That softy is going to be a lot more comfortable.

If it werw a Softail that totally twisted me, no...but in all honesty the Softail she has is very clean and nice and just really dosent make my heart beart faster. Almost every time I see a Nightster it makes me grin, and my heart spools up a bit.

I have had fast cars, and very fast bikes, but this will be my first HD. I understand that the ST is nicer on the average or longer road trip, and the Nightster might be better around town for my size. Its a hell of a call, but I am thinking that the softail might just be my entry into the HD world (no cash to spend, has to be a complete trade for my car...and I have to deal with the wife that pretty much hates bikes) and a stepping stone to a type of HD that I really want.

I dunno, could be that this deal will fall through too, but I have to have at least one good dream to hang onto after this shitty year. I know from experience that a motorcycle is better than most therepy, and ultimately I love the Pit Bull stance of a Nightster...

Theres just something about the sound and look of a HD. But, you guys know that better than me i'm sure.

Get what YOU want. The only downside is that what you think you want you may not like after all, but that's just part of the game.
Keep trying. Post your hotrod on a few bike and car forums. Just email the moderator first and ask if you're not a regular member, it's only polite. You may sell the hotrod ...but then, you're in a whole nuther dilemna! But a good one! <BG>
Take care and ride/drive safe.

[QUOTE=Krashdragon;6489495]Dont' forget with the Deuce...NOTHING stock fits it...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Its true that a lot of softail parts fits all except, a Deuce.., but not NOTHING.

But it was enough that my son traded his off because he got tired of seeing that most parts he wanted wouldn't fit on his.

My Deuce is the favorite around town but on the road the bagger wins. As for your wife if she sits on the back of a bagger you will have no choice, period.

Yeah.... nothing fits on a Deuce. No way you could customize it.
