I own a '07 FXDC.
For some time now, when I ride over irregularities in the road, there is something in the lower part of the bike, can't say exactly where, that makes a HEAVY metallic clanking sound. As if the engine was about to drop off the bike.
Verified fenders, shocks, fork, various engine parts, air filter, battery, electronics, kickstand: all seems solidly fixed. Thought may be one of the elastic engine mounts that is broken or loose, but the guy at the dealer checked for engine movement, and all was apparently ok. The noise is getting louder, so I'm not riding, least I break something expensive (me, for one) and I'm due to bring the bike to the dealer on 13th. But I'd like to know if anybody experienced anything like this and has an idea about what it could be. It seems definitely an elastic support to me...
What could be the cost of repair?
I don't know if this will help but my road king was making a hell of a rattle now & again some times worse than others drove me nuts traced it to the right rear only to find that the rubber spacer on top of the muffler where the bolts are had a lil space there so i stuck a metal shim in the dam thing & that solved my prob .Hope you find yours.
Oh, yes, I checked the mufflers as well. But I didn't check the metal bar connecting the two together... will check that Tuesday morning first thing, when I'm back home.
Any other suggestion will be much appreciated.
hey i think u might have to check your kickstand again..it might be bolted to the frame tight, but the arm is spring loaded and sometimes has a tendency to "bounce" when you hit a bump at speed.next time just pay attention to it (if you can) as it happens.
Yes, I know, and it was our first guess, but the rubber stop seems to be ok and in place...
And, if it were the kickstand, it would probably stay the same. But it's getting worse.
I have an '07 FXDB. I had, perhaps, the same noise. I took it back to the dealer while it was still, barely, under warranty. The tech took it for a test drive and confirmed the clanking sound when he would go over a bump. He traced it to the bolts that hold the gas tank. Strangely enough it just started making the sound again, a year later. I'll try to tighten them myself this time.

1. gas tank- tightened (remove seat to get the back one)
2. Jiffy stand rubber gromet moved- moved it back
3. steering head- re-torqued with hardened washer
4. belt guard- tightened
The jiffy stand was the loudest because it was hitting the frame when I would hit a bump.
