... test ride your bike if you were selling to a private party. I've only sold 1 Harley in the past and I wasn't gonna allow just any stranger to hop on for a test ride. Funny, it was never an issue when selling any of my many past ricers, I just didn't give a damn. That bike sold to the first person who looked at it, with out a test ride.

Now the shoe is on the other foot. I'm picking up a bike out of state in a couple of weeks and I sure as hell want to ride it before forking over 19g's.

So folks, if you're the seller do you let them test it. If you're the buyer do you insist.

Sure in both cases. As the seller I would let the potential customer know that he/she can test ride my bike...but there has to be a $1000 dollars in cash and a copy of their insurance in my hands before they start the bike. This takes care of any possible breakage and if the cost is over that much and they "decide" they don't like the bike, then it's reportable under their insurance to pay for it.
As the buyer, I would offer the $1000 cash/insurance to be held if the seller was hesitant about me test riding the bike.
That's fair enough in my opinion and it also says you're serious about buying the bike.

Not a bad plan.

I would probably also hold their car or spouse or hairpiece hostage until they safely returned.

AS a buyer I wouldn't buy a bike without riding it first.

AS a seller, I also wouldn't expect to sell a bike without allowing a test ride..

For 19Gs..you should test ride it first.

When I bought my present bike, I test rode it. We were all adults, mywife and son were with me,and his wife was with him. There was never any hesitation on the seller's part. My son even test rode it,(he's 32,and owns a Harley). Under similar circumstances,.sure, I'd let a guy test ride if I know for a fact he's an experienced rider .
If you were leary about letting someone on your bike, why not agree to meet in a large parking lot, like the mall, and he could take a short ride and never be out of sight.

I agree with SCRUVY deposit and written aggrement that if he damages it he pays for all damages. That way if you have to take him to court you have it in writting. I am a cop and I have worked two such incidents where the guy was test riding and crashed. Guess what he decided he didn't like the bike. BOTH TIMES. One was a harley the other was a Roadstar. owners were pissed but like I told them without it in writting you are stuck and will have to sue them in court. Both ended in court The judge only made the guy pay the deductable for the owners insurance. The only problem the owner gets hit with an at fault wreck on his record because his insurance had to pay. Be careful. I don't know how things are done in other states, but here in Wild Wonderful West Virginia YOUR insurance covers YOUR vehicle regardless of who is driving. I found this out the hard way when a buddy of mine wrecked my truck a couple years ago.

I agree.
A test ride could make a difference on selling the bike or not.You just have to go with your gut feeling.
I sold my wifes '03 883C a year ago.The guy bought the bike unseen.I delivered it,he gave me the cash, end of story.
Just a month ago I sold my Raodstar. The guy wanted a test ride.Said he owned a bike already and showed me his MC licence. He rode it,then bought it.
