I used to use empty brake fluid cans, I think the 32 oz type. I wanted something fairly sturdy in case of an accident, no glass bottles for sure.

Easiest way is to stop by a truck stop, look out back where the big guy's fuel up.Big trucks buy oil by the gallon, look in a trash can and, pick one out.I have done it this way for 40 yrs. and,yes they will fit in hard bag's with a little room to spare. They come with a little handle that's perfect for a bungee in case you have to carry it on a bitch bar and,a well sealing cap. When you no longer need it ,throw it away at the next truck stop.I've never had one leak and, be carefull it's not vented so pour slow.

To answer the questions about whether or not the MSR fuel bottle is okay for gas...it's a popular container with ADV riders plus, I've used it myself and have had no problems. They are pricey, but it is well made - you won't have to worry about the bottle getting pierced should it be dropped, it's lightweight and the cap is "child-proof", which makes it leak-proof. It's a bit of a pain, actually, to get the cap off, but better than leaking.

You do not want to fill it to the top because of expansion...esp if you're traveling to high elevations or in hot areas.

The MSR large size bottle is ~30 oz. = .23 gallons (about 1/4 gallon). On my bike, I figure 40 mpg to be safe (I almost always get more, esp when touring). That means and add'l 10 miles per container. I've carried a couple when touring, but have never needed it on a ride. I just emptied one into a friends bike this weekend because her bike was empty and we wanted to make sure she got to a fuel station with no worries.

The 30 oz MSR bottle from REI takes into account that you will not fill it to capacity...in other words, if you fill it to the top, you'll get more than the 30 oz.

There are other brands. Just found this one that's a tad less $$ http://www.campsaver.com/itemmatrix....6&MatrixType=1

I like the idea of the aluminum "bottles", no matter who makes them, but they just
seem to be too big a PITA for such an insignificant volume of fuel.. if I run out on
some boondocks road, I doubt it will be anywhere within 10 miles of a station
so I consider anything less than a gallon to be of no help at all.....

1 gallon = 128 ounces, so one gallon would be a little over 4 of those bottles..to be exact 4.26 bottles..monstead is correct, do not fill them to the top, the fuel needs room to expand.

ROFL, here is a thought..one of those bottles gets you 10 miles down the road...your 20 miles from a station..you walk 10 less miles...sorry just trying to help. Id find a 1 gallon can, metal can, like the coleman fuel can and see if it fit..make sure the lid seals up good while your still home. Also, its cheap, its easy and it will expand nicely when the fuel expands from the heat.

LOL!!! There's some real truth in that...

I'm leaning more and more to just getting a new can of Home Depot paint solvent,
unloading it into an El Cheapo plastic jug, then just using the cleaned can and
a funnel.
