Hey everyone,
I need major help I have a '84 Ironhead that I had a rather costly custom paint job done on, anyways it was only done about 5 months or so ago. I now have had to take my tank off and carry it back to my painter cuz it seems that the shitty paint saver ring I put on didnt ever create a seal with its silicone adhesive, so now the vapors have gotten under my paint and rather quickly started bubbling and lifting the paint and ruining the work done. I would like to know what ya'll recomend I can do in order to prevent this from happenning again once I get my tank back from the painter.
Thanx
I'll be watching this thread close!!! I've had the tank off my girlfriends Sporty TWO times now to get repainted. It was painted Ford Windveil Blue (like the new mustangs use). After a few weeks the paint bubbled right off around the gascaps. Took it back and had it repainted. I put Paint saver gascaps on (at the suggestion of the painter)and one week after it was repainted the paint is again blistering OUTSIDE of the paintsaver ring.
So now the painter tells me it's because of the new additives in gasolene and there is nothing that can be done and motorcycle tanks will do this now. So I asked him, "So the gas is eating the paint. The color is Windveil Blue, What are you going to tell the guy who HAS a windveil blue mustang that you just repainted his Quarterpanel and HIS paint starts bubbling off around the gas door when he fills his tank"?!?!?
I would ALSO like to hear any suggestions. One thing I thought was kind of funny and ironic, I had my tanks painted F'ing rattle can black (Krylon) on my Softail and spilled gas all over them. No problem, no peeling, no discoloring, nothing. But the supposed high quality bodyshop guys can't find paint that wont bubble off when this new gas hits it.
Also, on the second paint job the guy said the inside of the filler hole needed to be painted so that there wasn't a gap from metal to paint near the gascap opening. Yeah well now it's just a sticky mess of gooey paint that runs down inside the filler hole.
I hear ya man, it sucks that supposedly they can't figure it out. I have talked to other riders in person that own their own shop and they don't understand why the adhesive never hardend up and sealed. My bike has the Pinhead and hellraiser theme on it from the movie. I did order a new style gas cap that has a paint saver ring actully mounted to it and screws into the gas bung, then the middle just screw out to allow filling up, I am still waiting for that to be shipped from californa, but i am still gonna want to put some kind of sealant or etc around paint edge @ the bung but I just dont know what to use.
That's what I am thinking but I am not a body and paint guy. I am hoping someone in that field reads this thread and can shine some light on this. Maybe it's a certain brand of paint that does this, maybe the paint manufacturers are aware of this problem and are working on it???? I don't know. I would think that "Paint saver" rings had to become necessary for a reason. Technology usually straightens out problems eventually. Maybe there is some brand of paint to buy (or some brand to stay away from??)

The tank I'm having the problem with is a Fatbob style tank (for a Sporty), dual caps. on the second paint job I bought the gascaps from Drag Specialties (called Renegade gascaps). The paintsaver portion screws into the tank like the original caps would, and the middle cap unscrews to fill the tank (probably what you also ordered). The paint is already bubbling on the outside of the "permanent" screw in portion. I sure wasn't happy to see that, I thought the problem was handled.
Yeah i'm not either, I thought that supposedly the inside of the bung wasn't suppose to be painted. I asked my uncle and other old school bikers and some of them say to use silicone spread it out , let it dry and do that for a days before putting bike back on the road, so that it would've had time to build up separate layers for protection, they did it back in the days, lol.
I'm no painter myself, but I have had a bike custom painted and never experienced any problems like that. I think ( don't hold me to this ) there are additives that are mixed into the paint that can make it dry harder and be more resistant to chemicals. With the cost of a paint job being what it is, I'd be real upset with stuff like that.

thanks, hey out of curiosity did they paint the inside of the bung on your paint job? I need to talk with my painter and see what he has come up with so far hopefully like you said maybe he can add extra chemicals or something to help this problem. I have been missing some nice *** riding weather here lately since my bike is down and unfourtunately it's the only one I have for now. I am trying to get up with this guy that has a 2002 sportster for sale, I have only seen the pics and its pretty, and he only wants $2900.00 for it but he hasn't got back with me yet.
Wish I could help. But this is just one of the reasons for never again will I ever shell out big dollars for paint on a machine I use all the time.Once did one of my muscle cars within the first week got a big nick in one of the doors.Almost had a cardiac arrest.Just not worth the aggravation.Good luck
