I have a 1990 FLHS that has been sitting for a few years. All I know about the history of the bike is that it ran until the former owner died several years ago.
Can you please give me advice on what to do before trying to start the bike?
I tried to start it when I first got it 3 years ago. It seemed like it wanted to start then "burped" a lot of oil and I must have cranked the starter too much because it blew out the battery. It has been sitting since.
I'm ready to put some time into restoring it but first want to know that it runs. What should I do before and while I try to start it?
New battery, oils, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, oil filter.
Clean the carb, gas tank and fuel line. How are the tires?
If your just going to start it then it's going to sit for a while (over 6 months) or your going to tear down the engine during restoration, you could just clean the carb, run a makeshift fuel tank/line and borrow a battery. (at least check the fluid levels).
Run it until all the fuel is out of the carb and you may not have to clean it again.
Being that it has been sitting for a while, I might squirt some oil into the cylinders, and turn it over a few times without starting it. might even go for some seafoam or something like it to free up the rings. Sounds like you may encounter dried up seals, gaskets and what not. For sure do as has already been posted.

Good point on putting oil in the cylinders, Marvel Mystery Oil is the stuff to use.
