My wife and I are on the bike yesterday and we pull up next to two awesome sounding HDs at a light. As we go our seperate ways, she says "buy youself new pipes for Father's Day this year". Yaaaa Meeee! I have Scream'n Eagle slash-cuts on my 06 softail and have never been happy with them. In fact, she herself has called them everything from sleeper to grandpa pipes. So here's my question, can I get the deep, ballsy HD tone (not necessarily loud) cheaply? I'd like something similar to V&H long shots without the price tag. I'm considering Rush or maybe other slip-ons. If I do this, should I put the stock pipes back on for the application and sell the SE's? Also considering Big City Thunder baffles, but heard they are too loud? Harley quoted me somewhere around $800 for the V&Hs which I can't quite justify with kids in college. What would you guys do?
Well first off I'd hug the stuffin outa my wife and then I'd be prepared to spend a long time on You Tube. There are a ton of video clips with all kinds of muffler/pipe combinations. If you have good speakers you can get a pretty good idea what a particular setup will sound like.
If you just want to stick with slip on's then Rush's sounds good and deep and also Python sounds good too. I had a set of SE slip on's and know what you mean about not being happy. Well I was never going to be happy with the looks of slip on's so I got a full set of pipes and I'm happy now.
First off get away from the HD dealer for pipes all they do is look them up in the Drag book and what ever that prices says is what your paying. When i got my V&H big radius they looked in the book and said $700 bucks i looked around on the internet and found them shipped to my door for $525 big savings.
Check out summerset motorsports in ky, eastern performance is another site that will probably be one of your best prices they are hard to beat.

How about half that price? I bought my long shots from here (few years ago) and paid less than 400. They have them listed for $440 or Best Offer. Offer them 400... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VANCE...Q5fAccessories

I added them to my long shots and it gave me the exact sound I was looking for. I can putt through my neighborhood and the neighbors say it isn't loud at all - but once I hit the street they can bark.
If you're just bolting on the exhaust, you won't need the re-tune. If you add a higher flowing air cleaner (stage 1), then it's highly suggested you add some sort of tuner.
