not to big on the strap wrenches..I've tried a couple of different kinds myself. I have a front spoiler on my Softail also, making the filter a little harder to get at.. I just use a large channellock plier, and that works just fine.

Use an empty 2 liter coke bottle.

Slip the coke bottle under the filter.
Use the ratchet to take off the filter, letting it, and the oil inside, to fall inside the coke bottle.

Easy, no mess way to get the filter off and keep oil from getting all over your motor.

.

Excellent Idea...

When doing my 1st oil change on my FB, i formed a piece of cardboard and let the oil drain out while i ate lunch, but it still made a mess.

I would have liked to had the sumbich who gorilla'ed the filter on to where i had to drive a screwdriver through to get it loose..

What I do is slide a piece of cardboard under the filter and the punch 2 holes in the filter with a nail (one at the top and one at the bottom). oil drains from the filter into the catch pan...ZERO mess

Get a piece of tubing and hold it to the top hole and blow, that will force the remainder of the oil out before removal.
