So how many folks here are members of the Harley Owners Group? I myself am not a member due to the fact that I simply cant stand 90% of the dealers here in the Phoenix area.
When HOG first got started I became a member and stayed with them till I sold my 89 in 91 I think. We had a good dealer back then. When I bought the 05 they give you a year membership but after the year is up I don't know what I will do. Hell the local dealer used to give HOG members a discount when you bought parts but not this one and I ain't gonna pay there prices when there are dealers that will sell it at a discount. My mama did not raise no fool.[sm=forgetit.gif]
I've been a HOG member for 11 or so years. I like some of the benefits of National HOG. As far as the local chapter goes, I take what I want of what they have to offer, and leave the rest.
I just joined because it gave me a discount on insurance.
I havent had the time yet to determine if its worth more than that as I've only been a
member for one day
You have to remember that the mission of a local HOG chapter is that of a ride group. They are required by HOG national to have a certain number of "closed" (HOG members only) rides and a certain number of "open" rides.
From my experience, a very small percentage of HD owners in a given area actually participate in HOG chapter events. If some dealers didn't offer discounts, a lot of folks would not join at all.
If you have an active chapter and the events they sponser are rides you enjoy and you enjoy the company of the members, then as a ride group, the HOG chapter is worth it.
I have belonged to a very active H.O.G. Chapter (Central Illinois H.O.G.-Effingham, IL) since 1987. It is true that if you have 300 members you will have around 50-75 very active members. That's still a good number because I'm not that good with names anyway (lol). We have a great time and ride almost every weekend.
It really helps if you have a good supportive Dealership, which we do.
When I bought my Harley, I was given an automatic membership to HOG. The only problem that I have is because of my work schedule and the distance from the dealership, I haven't been able to attend any of the meetings. Maybe someday I will be able to see one and experience what goes on there.
