I have had my 07 RK for a couple yrs, and looking to trade for a 15 SGS. I have been pricing insurance and Harley insurance seems to be good. If you are a HOG member they also give a discount.
My questions is: How many are HOG members? Is it worth the $45 a year? what are some other benefits? Would you and have you renewed yearly?
My boss has his and said 1 tow several year ago was worth it and covered years of dues!!! Also while in Fayetteville this year at Bikes Blues and BBQ I noticed one section for HOG members with free food and drinks? That alone I feel would have covered my dues with me and GF eating and drinking a couple.
Shane
Yes I kinda searched forums and didn't really see anything on HOG members or memberships
Shane, if you select 'Search' in the middle of the blue bar above, then chose 'Advanced' and type in 'hog' stand back - you'll be flooded with HOG threads! There are tons of 'em. You'll find that views on membership vary greatly both for and agin.
I have been a member since 1990...at that time membership was about $25 and after 2 years conversion lifetime was $75.
So I am a lifetime member and it cost about $125 ( I think).
AT the time most dealers gave a 10% discount on P&A- that went away by mid-90's
I have gotten my Insurance through HOG since 1994, and that rate is a little better. The HOG insurance brokers will not make sure that your policy is suitable- they are not experts so you have to take responsibility for that and make sure the coverages are what you need ( for instance they will often cram a $25 roadside on your policy- which you already have as a hog member).
( CA residents I strongly recommend Mike Felder ins.)
HOG comes with basic roadside- a $20 upgrade give unlimited occurrence, unlimited mileage ( to nearest dealer).
I have used this a couple of times for tows which would have cost multiple hundreds $$$ each
I also like the road atlas they send out every year...I have one in each of my cars etc.
I have a stack of pins and patches in a box.
I have had free snacks at a hill climb event.
so that's me, I have gotten out of it more than I paid.
I know that some people like "joining" and "clubs" and it gives them a reason to get out and ride more.
I have been a member since I don't know when, I reup every year, not sure why because I don't attend any meetings and rarely attend a HOG Rally. But what I do enjoy is the old Hog Tales or HOG Magazine, Every once in awhile I get an Enthusiast Magazine, and every year I get an annual events magazine with dates and locations for all US events. That book will also inlclude maps of all continiental States and sometimes scenic roads are identified. Above that my local dealership offers a 10% discount above everything else for all purchases.
If you travel you get a discount on motel rooms. I think it's Best Western. You also get a discount on AT&T cell phone service. I think it's a 20% discount. That discount alone will save you the annual dues in a couple of months. You also get the road side assistance for 1 tow per year that's upgradable. I also like the magazine for ideas on places to ride to.
Got a membership when I bought the Limited, expires in a few months. Doubt I'll renew. In my case the benefits they offer don't do me any good, I get similar discounts already. YMMV
HOG ain't worth a plug nickle. You'll get a better discount through AAA or AARP. And not all dealers offer discounts to HOG members - in fact very few actually do.
Ya, you get a magazine and road atlas with patches and pins but you can buy a far better road atlas at any book store.
Take the first year for free, then say adios to HOG.
I have been a member since '08 and belong to a local Chapter. Our Chapter is one of the good ones with some good people. So for that I keep renewing, I am a Road Captain in the Chapter and enjoy helping new riders learn. I have used the tow twice.
