Default 1998 Fat Boy speedo issue

Hello.....Question about speedometer sensor replacement.
Does the speedometer come apart from the rear side to get to the speedometer sensor wiring terminals and if so how do I get it apart without damaging anything else.....all the other wiring terminates to terminals located on the "outside" of the housing on the back....the speedometer had been getting erratic/stuck as of late and finally quit moving all together.I removed the sensor and cleaned it but to no avail.
The lighting is OK and I checked what terminals I could get to for corrosion/loose connections already and all look fine. The speedometer still appears to be functional ( it still "bumps" up to zero mph upon turning the key to the "on" position ).I noticed as a probable side effect of the sensor not sending signal to the speedo head unit the turn cancellation has quit working also and that wiring also has some terminations on the speedometer housing as well...per the wiring diagram.
Is it OK to cut and splice the new sensor into the head if I cannot get to the terminals inside the speedometer housing (solder and heat shrink)?
Trying to do this myself without taking it to a shop......if possible.
Any ideas from you spurts here?
