Default Bus Er Signal

So sometimes my 2004 Sportster won't start and "bus er" code shows up. The book says this indicated a problem in the serial data port but I can't figure out what the heck that means!! Anyone have any suggestions?? Surely appreciate it.

Yea, but it won't start. If I mess with it for a while I can get it going. I hold in the reset button on the odometer and get it back to showing the mileage. The other thing is sometimes the speedo won't work at all. If I turn the engine off then back on it will usually work. Maybe the speedometer is crap.

Maybe it's trying to tell you to take the bus instead.

the serial data port is the plugin wher ethe dealership would hook up to scan your onboard computer, it could have a fault in it or has become corroded, loose etc

That burnt crap is just depressing. Makes me want to go to the garage and reassure the girls it will not happen to them.

You could have a loose connector on the ECM. I don't know where they hid it on a sporty tho.

The major electronic components on your bike, the ICM (computer), the TCM (turn signal control module) and the instruments (speedo), communicate via the Serial Data Bus. The first place to start, is to unplug all connectors between those modules, clean the contact pins, coat the contacts with some dielectric grease, and reconnect them.
