Grips are fairly simple. The left just pulls right off. The right, you have to open up the control box & disconnect your two cables. Hardest part of that is not dropping the little brass dogs that hold the cables. They're a bitch to find if ya do!
Like they said.. changing grips isn't a big deal, as long as you don't drop either of the cable stays.. I put new grips on my wife's sporty, and my experience was the same as ash's.. the left grip is a breeze.. 5 minutes.. maybe, the right side took a little longer due to having to loosen up the throttle cable, change the grip and then readjust the cable..
On the left one just take your compressed air nozzle and stick under the lip of the left grip and while you're blowing air just pull off the grip.
On the right you need to remove the top and bottom screws from the housing. There should be two. Loosen both adjuster at the switch housing all the way in. Pull housing apart gently. You will see how the wire cables attach to the grip. Using a thin screw driver lift the wire one at a time and remove the end of the wire where it's docked. Be sure to not lose the little brass piece even though you should have some new ones with the new grips. Save those just in case you ever lose any.
After they are removed take the old grip off put the new one on and reverse the process. This would be a good time to lube your throttle cables with a teflon-based cable lube. After it's back together and it moves nice and smooth; adjust the throttle cables to where you have little to no slop at the throttle grip.
Use your grip glue and put the left grip on. Some go under the housing on the left so you might have to loosen it and slip it in. Check this before applying glue or hair spray as some people use.
I was told if you screw up the right side, you are in trouble. I took mine to the local dealer on a Saturday morning. Got it in and replace correctly for not too much dough.
Let the dealer do mine. 1/2 hr minimum labor charge = $37.50. Took him 10 minutes. Wish I was mechanically inclined and didn't get frustrated so easily.
