So my brother & I are on the way home returning from an overnight road trip, when I look over & see his motor gushing oil. I signal him & we stop (luckily maybe a 100 yards past an exit to a gas station). Now, he rides a 79 Ironhead sportster, & unfortunately that bike has done nothing to disprove the HD stereotype... I've seen parts fall off while he is riding... but he loves it & keeps putting things back on as they fall off. Anyway, this particular occurrence happened the day after he broke down (we were literally 140 miles from home) due to his generator acting up (which ended up being a sticky magnet inside the generator... but that's another tale). So there we are pushing his bike up the wrong way (on the shoulder mind you) of the off ramp to the gas station, all the while a group of 4 meatheads on Harleys (they ALL had identical, save for the color, brand spanking new bikes) sitting watching us, which is no big deal on the surface as we're 2 grown men pushing a sporty up the hill & anymore help would be overkill. What really got me though was the fact that they we're sitting there actually pointing & laughing. I mean REALLY? That's all these guy's can think to do is point & laugh? I mean I give my brother shyte because of his ride... but I will wait till the crisis has been resolved before I start slinging it... that's my perogative as his brother. But pointing & laughing? COME ON! I did that when I was 10! And the thing that takes the cake? This other dude (not part of the douche-bag group) rides up on a metric & offers us his assistance... a really salt of the earth kind of offer too... tools, trailer, garage, & a ride back to madison (at this point we're 30 miles outside of town) We thanked him profusely but we had already called a buddy with a trailer, so we couldn't take him up on his generous offer... I sincerely hope any one of those jack asses reads this so I can say "thanks for nothing you crew cut wearing, identical bike riding, limp dicked posing wannabe's... it's guys like you that are diluting the gene-pool!"
ps. the oil gushing only looked catastrophic... everything is well with his bike... he & his buddy had to fabricate a couple of parts, but he DID finish the ride...
Posers... Dropped my ride at a roadside rest stop, on the way to Sturgis in '06, (foot slipped in some sand on 'crete'...it could happen ). Bunch of hard core looking dudes and dudettes, leaning against the shady side of a brick wall...Lot full of bikes, all types...no-one offered any assistance, not that it was needed, but... Little ol' lady pulls up in an SUV and offers to clean a scrape on my elbow and wrap it in gauze... Go figure...This isn't the same land i was raised in anymore...
Laughing at someones misery is chicken ****. I would have started walking over there an asked if you needed help. Same for the guy above that dropped his bike. I would started walking over there and asked if you needed help. I would have helped both of you if you needed it because of the uphill push on the broke down bike and the loose footing on the dropped bike.
I've only been back in the saddle 10 years now and my first HD 2.5 years ago, a 2008 RKC. I know I would have offered help (I have many times) and hope these few a-holes do not jade you to think all new or newer riders are like that.
Their are jerks and pompous scumbags in this world........it should not be a surprise but it is, that there would be some riding Harley's.
Not meaning to change the subject (and really I'm not), but our fire department, like many others, does the "Fill the Boot" donation collection every summer to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We stand out at an intersection with our bunker boots and people drive by and toss in what they can to help out. Every year I see it happen. The little old lady driving a barely running 72 Plymouth will cross 3 lanes to put a $20 bill in the boot. but the pompous a$$hole in the brand new Escalade/Hummer/BMW will not even make eye contact with you.
How much you wanna bet those guys on the brand new Harleys probably take their bikes to the dealer to have the clock set? Thanks for letting me vent. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
I had three different bikers stop and ask if i was all right when i got into an accident yesterday. The only a-hole that kept driving by going way to fast ended up knowing cager that pulled out infront of me, go figure. I've only been riding a few months and one of the first things i was told by a old time rider was to stop offer help to ANY form of bike that is on the side of the road...
