1 - Read the owners manual.

2 - Practice low-speed and avoidance manuvers regularly.

3 - Black-out all the chrome so you can spend more time riding and less time polishing.

Do use it as an excuse to go someplace you've never been before.

Do ride it in the rain, cold, dark, wind and anything else nature throws at you.

Do ride it because it's what you want to do, not because you want somebody else to see you do it.

Keep your head and eye's up.

Easy on the front break in gravel, wet leaves, grass, sand, ect.

On some slow speed turns, give her a little power and a little rear break, this makes the bike want to stand up.

Last, but not least. New riders should only stop at evey other bar, not evey bar.

1. Take advantage of rider courses to keep your skill set up -lifelong learning
2. Ensure the bike fits - esp when making modifications
3. Read the owner & maintenance manuals

1) Take a MSF course!
2) Buy used, unless you need a warranty.
3) Buy what you want - not what everyone else tells you to buy.

I'm impressed that the thread isn't littered with silly responses...good on ya guys.

Three things:
1. Get the manuals for your bike and use them.
2. Remember that bright lights on your backside helps keep you alive. Get a Brightass light.
3. Don't "try to keep up"; just ride at your own pace.
