Default Chin strap upgrade.

I think I just spent the best 5 bucks I have ever spent. Hodag Motor Parts (and probably other places as well) sell this quick release buckle that you attach to any helmet that just has plain D-rings. D-rings suck for the most part and really suck if your hands are cold. They work and are effective, but are cumbersome at best. My biltwell helmet just has the plain D-rings for example. I just put this little buckle on and poof, its like a new helmet. Or certainly like a higher end helmet. So heres a shameless plug for a part I have nothing to do with, but really liked. Grand total WITH shipping was only 6 dollars and change.

yeah, the quick release is easy to use. the d-rings do a better job of keeping the helmet on your head in an accident though.
pretty sure the quick release is not dot if that is important to you.

i know my novelty helmet uses the quick release & every dot helmet i've had used the d-rings.

Been thinking of getting a set of buckles like these and a football chin pad like Nicholson in Easy Rider for my Fulmer 3/4 silver metal flake helmet.

When my helmet needed replacing (foam turned to goo) I bought this:

One "improvement" it provided is a small flexible tab attached to the lower d-ring which makes it a lot easier to control buckling. It also has a snap to immobilize the loose strap end. These features could easily be added to any stock helmet.

My Harley Davidson branded 1/2 helmet came with a quick release. It is not like the one shown. Much more substantial. I've had it for about 7 years. Works nice. The Full face modular I bought last year has the D rings.

I had the similar flexible tab, but it broke off the other day. Now it is just a standard d-ring.

I really liked that tab - it helped a lot.

A plastic quick release snap will break easily under force. However, they do sell quick release snaps that which use a metal lock, that meet DOT standards. They sell them on ebay, and I've also seen them at several dealerships.

Well, today is the first day with it. Seems decent. If it goes to poop I guess I can always keep useing the D-rings. But for 5 bucks, I'm not gonna jump off a cliff if its turns out to be crappy.

Got one from my dealer for the 3/4 helmet, but I like the D rings better. The buckle tends to loosen up and is harder to tighten while wearing than the D rings. Just left those with my other helmets.
